Gyms are helping to shed pounds and greenhouse gas emissions.

Although the economy remains shaky, the health club industry has yet to buckle. Experts predict gym attendees will put their money towards greener facilities. Fitness chains and health clubs across the nation have decided to go green, developing eco-friendly buildings and using recycled materials. An all green, trendy facility exists just a few train stops away in Bushwick, Brooklyn.

Green Fitness Studio, which opened late last year, provides its members with over 10 different fitness classes, one-on-one nutritional coaching, an organic juice bar, and spa. The fitness studio has everything your regular state of the art gym has, but with an eco-conscious spin. (Minus the high carbon emissions of course!) The gym’s green initiatives include recycled rubber flooring in the workout area, bamboo flooring in the group fitness studios, a living roof to utilize less energy and conserve rain water while reducing storm water runoff, and utilizing refurbished and self-powered gym equipment. That’s not all.  Green Fitness uses compact fluorescent lights, launders it towels at a green laundromat, utilizes touch screen computers that consume almost 50 percent less power, conserves water, and so much more. The gym not only practices eco-friendly living, but encourages its members to practice what they preach and carry reusable water bottles instead of the hard to decompose plastic bottles. This local gym is just one of a hand-full of green gyms. So far Equinox on Tenth Avenue in NY, Crunch on Sunset Boulevard in California, The Green Microgym in Portland and others have or are in the process of “going green.”
