Women are known to be great multi-taskers. And somehow, someway, everything falls right into perfect place. This is definitely the case for Rashana. This marketing specialist, freelance writer, and soon to be author shares her personal story entitled “Goal Diggers” in the book Souls of My Young Sisters with the hopes to inspire other women.
Honey Magazine:
Rashana Hooks: What was your inspiration for your new book “Goal Diggers” and what is a Goal Digger?
Goal Digger was actually the title of a blog post I had written about a year ago describing my life as a young woman trying to accomplish the many goals I set for myself. It was an honest take on the sacrifices, challenges, perseverance and ultimately the rewarding feeling I get when I achieve a goal. Obviously, a play on words from the term “Gold Diggers” Goal Diggers are women who strive, sacrifice and succeed. They are women who prey for a purpose and live for their passion. You can read about Goal Diggers right here each week on Wonder Woman Wednesday’s.
How did you get the opportunity to tell your story in the book “Souls of My Young Sisters”?
One of the publishers of the Souls of My Sisters imprint read my Goal Digger blog post and called me immediately to tell me that I needed to share my story with the world and write a book about it. Fast forward to today and here I am on my book journey.
What inspired you to be a writer? Was it someone or something?
Well I’ve always had a love affair with reading and I’m a certified magazine addict, so I naturally developed a love of writing. When I was younger my favorite author was Judy Blume and I always admired the way her stories seemed so real and life-like. I remember telling myself that when I grew up I was going to become a writer and change women’s lives. Writing is also therapeutic for me. Being able to share my life experiences to help myself and someone else, is the best two for one deal there is.
What advice do you have for someone that wants to write a book? What steps should they take first?
I know this may sound cheesy and cliché, but my one and only advice to someone who wants to write a book is to just do it! Write the book in its entirety (or at least part of it for those non-fiction writers) and then worry about getting it published. The hard part is finishing the book or proposal. The easy part is convincing someone to publish it. I’ve met many aspiring authors and the one consistent concern I always hear from them is “I don’t know where to start?” My answer is always the same – start with writing it.
How do you stay motivated to follow your dreams? Do you have any tips?
I’m honestly afraid of regrets. Knowing that I could have accomplished something but did not due to fear is the scariest thing to me. I also stay motivated through prayer and a vision board. I keep a board above my computer filled with inspirational quotes and photographs of women whom I admire (i.e. Goal Diggers – Oprah Winfrey, Michelle Obama, Desiree Rogers); places I want to visit; assets I wish to acquire; and a montage of things that make me happy. I would recommend that everyone create their own vision board and write their goals down on paper. Having the ability to see your dreams on paper underlines the term “Seeing Is Believing”
