You spent two weeks preparing for your interview. You had mock interviews with family members, picked out the perfect outfit, and even arrived 20 minutes early only to totally “sink” in the interview. It was horrible! So now what? Do you sulk around the house and get depressed or do you learn from the experience and keep it moving?
Every day people are not hired because of “bad” interviews. Interviews that have gone awry can be extra stressful because the thought “Maybe I would have gotten it if I did better” may haunt you. Listen folks you have to learn from it, let it go, and move on. The more time you spend sulking about it, is time that could be spent looking for more jobs or networking at a cool event.
GO OUT AND CELEBRATE
This probably sounds crazy but it is really the best thing to do after a “terrible” interview. Why? Well let’s see, you spent countless hours researching the company, picking out the perfect outfit, and practicing in your mirror so you definitely deserve a treat. Reward yourself for preparation well done and just remind yourself that all that prepping wasn’t for nothing. Even though the interview itself didn’t go so well at least you know that you are a pro at preparing for the next one.
STILL FOLLOW UP
Although you may be absolutely mortified at how the actual interview went, it is still essential to follow up. Send a follow up email letting the potential employer know how thrilled you were to meet with them, that you appreciated their time, and that you look forward to hearing from them soon. If you hear from them great but if not, it definitely isn’t the end of the world.
MAKE A LIST
You are amazing whether you believe it or not! There is not one person on the entire planet that is like you…everyone is unique. That means that you offer something special that no one else has. But do you know what that is? Take time after your interview to make a list of what you believe makes you a unique person. What kind of personality do you have? What are your creative talents? Are you upbeat? Are you extra driven? Then make a list of what went wrong and why and make notes on how you can improve on each thing. This is a great time to create solutions for what went wrong and to figure out what makes you special so that you can combine these things to make your next interview a complete success.
