fb_letitsnow_020810Baby, it’s cold outside! In the winter months, dry scalp is very common and can be the main reason a perfectly good mane goes wrong. Not to worry, we have a few remedies for those personal blizzards!

1. See your professional stylist: Dry scalp can easily be confused with dandruff. It’s always a good idea to point out any abnormalities to your stylist so that the problem can be fixed before it gets worse. Dry scalp can be treated by a stylist but dandruff should be discussed with your dermatologist.

2. Hot oil treatment: Use olive oil for heavier/course hair or Moroccan oil for fine/ reg hair. Heat up the oil of your choice for 30 secs in the microwave. Carefully apply to scalp (remember… IT’S HOT!!). Cover your head with a shower cap and sit for 30 minutes. Rinse the oil thoroughly, shampoo (preferably with a clarifying shampoo and condition).

3. The almighty K-Pak: Joico has an amazing 4 step treatment system called K-Pak. This system has loads of proteins in them and really gives your hair and scalp the nourishing boost that it needs.

4. Stay Hydrated: Yes, ladies the amount of water you consume effects your scalp as well. Remember: your scalp is skin too!

I completely forgot about hot oil treatments and I really do need one. It’s little reminders, such as this, that helps me keep it all together. Thanks HONEYMAG/Memi!

Great advice, your right I forget that water will effect my scalp as well as the rest of my body. Thanks for the insightful tips.

  7. Lashonda Jones says:

I haven’t had a hot oil treatment in years and I definitely need one. And I guess I do confuse dry scalp with dandruff. My scalp is very dry after I get a wash and I’m scared to wear black because of the flakes. It’s ridiculous. I will try these tips and see how it works out.

I would love to see something on getting your ends trimmed. Is it really needed to make your hair grow and how much should they really be trimming. Thanks Memi!

  8. Lori Phifer says:

I just read LaShondas’ post. I would also like to see something about trimming. I have always heard that although you hair will grow even if you don’t trim your ends, there would also be a lot of breakage and that the hair would not be considered healthy. Truth? Myth? I will say that i have noticed that my hair grows more quickly after a trim

  9. Sallie says:

Very informative. I also forget about the hot oils treatments. Is the K-Pak something that I can pick up at a beauty supply store? Also, I would be interested in your thoughts about hair color, permanent vs. temporary.

  10. Sana' Rasul says:

I have a question…Do you wash the hair, add the olive oil, wash again then condition? Great tips and I will definitely be checking out the K-Pak.

  11. Kimmi Cupcakes says:

listen to Memi- she’s my hairstylist and always keeps my hair looking healthy and flyyyy. I love to dye my hair and switch up in the summer with highlights and the K-Pak really repairs my hair (and it smells goooood) Oh and if ur in the NYC area, check Memi out at An’jels on 46th bet 5/6th.

  12. Natasha says:

I use Moroccan oil on my hair. I never thought to heat the oil and apply it to my dry scalp. That is a tip I will definitely try. Thanks for the tip.

  13. Memi says:

Hey Eveyone, thank you for all of your comments and questions!

Lashonda: try switching up your shampoo and conditioner, this may be the cause of your dry scalp. Try something that is high in proteins and moisturizer.

Sallie: Kpak is a joico product and they like to sell exclusivly to salons so that your stylist can instruct you on how to use them. The salon where i am located has this product if you are in NYC if not try using the joico salon directory.

Sana’: you can apply the treatment to unwashed hair. However if you feel like your scalp is very dirty then you can do a short wash just to clear the pores before adding more oil.

Im very happy that you have found these tips to be very helpful! i will definitely provide tips on trimming hair very soon. if you have anymore questions please let me know!

  14. Alycia says:

Great advice! I will be trying this out soon!

  15. Christina says:

You forgot to mention Apple Cider Vinegar Rinse for the scalp. This gentle clarifying rinse has made my hair shinier, softer, and healthier. Not to mention, I can’t remember the last time I had dandruff or a dry scalp. That ACV is something else. It is unbeleivable. Even more unbeleivable, a jug of ACV is only 3.99 at the market!

  16. Sallie says:

When can we expect your post on trimming hair? I have tried the Hot oil treatment and must say that I was very delighted. Looking forward to your future posts.
