New Year’s resolutions usually include predictable maxims like “Hit the gym more often,” “Keep a journal,” or “Stop jumping off with so-and-so,” but what about your promises to your wardrobe? If you’re hanging on to bad fashion habits that need to be dropped like a Facebook pest, or just want a new direction to go in, we’ve got four little gems to help you reaching your full style potential in ‘10.

Thou Shalt Find an Alternative to Uggs
Uggs have become the fashion equivalent of a dirty little secret: everyone’s got ‘em yet you often have to be drunk or blackmailed to admit ownership. No one denies their comfort, marshmallow-y familiarity, and reliable feeling of satisfaction–but the same can be said of mac ’n cheese, and you know what too much of that does to your appearance over time. The Ugg brand itself has come up with an even better model to shelter your feet from the cold: one that’s sturdier, just as warm, and far more pleasing to the eye: the Belfair. At $180 they’re an investment, yet are waterproof, windproof, and sport a streamlined design that far outweighs the lazy silhouette of traditional Uggs. It’s a nice graduation to–dare we say it–a grown and sexy Ugg. (Zappos, $180.00)

Go Grey
Nudes and neutrals will be all over the fashionscape come spring. Get a jump on the trend by incorporating some classic, can’t-go-wrong grey into your repertoire. Like a girl who’s equally comfortable uptown and downtown, this hue can whisper ”sophistication” and ”elegance” in one take, ”cutting edge” and “modern” in another. It’s a timeless color that has to work hard to look bad on any skin tone, and can stand alone or blend in coolly with multiple tones. Get inspired by this Rare by Topshop number, which features another big trend for spring: feathers. (Top Shop, $78.00)

Shop Smart, Not Hard
Going green is not just about soda cans and water bottles. The same sustainability and consumer-conscious principles can be applied to your closet so as to not fall into that never-ending cycle of purchasing stop-gaps for your wardrobe. Those multiple, throw-away little shirts you keep copping for $19.99 that never seem to leave you fully satisfied? Cease and desist the impulse buys, trade them in for one sumptuous dressy top that will do the job every time, and affect variety using accessories. The key to buying choice good pieces lies in finding ones with just the right amounts of uniqueness and functionality, that way they always feel fresh and never lose their appeal. Acne’s secret trench coat is a perfect example of this happy marriage: a kinky little gun flap, snap closures, and buttoned epaulets give it enough details to make it original yet the cut and quality render it timeless. (La Garconne, $396)

Monkey See, Monkey Don’t
Part of the reason we love celebrity fashion is because it can inspire us to untried sartorial heights. But that can easily turn on a dime when you try to recreate a look to the tee that just doesn’t work for your personal style. Often times what we love most about a star’s outfit are not necessarily the pieces (boyfriend blazer, stilettos, statement necklaces) but the feelings they engender (artless dishevelment, sass, and glamour, respectively). Try to approach emulating outfits by first putting your finger on what attitude they convey, and then selecting pieces accordingly.  Beyoncé’s and Gaga’s leotards, for ince [not a typo], may work in  “Video Phone” but not on you for Friday night at the club. What you likely want to recreate is the piece’s essence of uninterrupted sleek sexiness, which you can do with this Asos Jumpsuit option. The unified tailoring and rhinestone-emebellished shoulders give you some of the ‘tude without turning you into fodder for You Know You Dead Azz Wrong. (ASOS, $76.49)

Happy New Year, bellas, and werq them upgrades for ‘10!

loved this article. it’s funny because normally i’m little miss colorful but a few months ago i went grey. bags, jeans, Uggs [i will not let them go!], shirts, etc. the change came after seeing hoodrat after hoodrat dressed like rainbows with matching *plastic* jewelry. i refuse to even slightly resemble them so it looks like 2010 will be grey or all black everything :]

p.s. i prefer the millcreek’s over the belfair’s but i guess that is what you’re trying to steer away from haha.

Co-sign Sinful. My little cousins are killing me with all of the extremely colorful, but cheaply made things that they wear. Like you said, they look like hoodrats :( Sorry, it’s true. They jumped on this 80s trend and won’t let it go even though they weren’t around for most of that decade.

I love GREY!! It’s actually a staple in my wardrobe, so much so that my family makes jokes. But I’ve always found that I have more of a classic, pulled together look. I’ve tried being trendy…always come up short so I just stick with what I know. With an accessory or two, I can always change the look up. It works well on a grad student’s budget :)

Actually, I love wearing lots of colors. I think the key is moderation, sticking to two complimenting colors and one neutral tone to anchor it all. For example, I might wear a green turtleneck with a mustard sweater vest. But my slacks, pumps and handbag are neutral (maybe black or brown). I work in a corporate setting and am constantly getting compliments for my wardrobe. I think pops of color are appropriate and show an air of confidence. Looking like you fell off a rainbow with multiple colors or matching from head to toe (green turtleneck, mustard vest, green shoes, mustard bag, etc), not so much.

I , for myself, decided that i want to buy more quality pieces in my wardrobe and to accesories them with some articles. I am willing to spend a little more to get a piece ( if well maintained) that will last a lifetime then some pieces here and there that i have to renew every year !!!!
ps : love the photos of solange that you guys did not to long ago… see me on edgyness.com
