He’s an authentic artist who lives by his lyrics, and has committed his life to making “art that matters.” With the well-received Underneath the Sky mixtape series and his latest live EP, Get to Know Me Live! at Swing House, Mateo is captivating the world of digital music.

Mateo took time out of a recent recording session with the infamous Krucial, to chat it up with Honey Magazine. He spoke about everything from upcoming projects, leaving MySpace, to the craziest thing he’s ever done for love.

If you don’t know about him by now you better ask somebody!

Honey Magazine: Let’s get to know Mateo. How would you describe yourself in a few words?
Mateo: Well, personality wise, I am pretty laid-back, and I am actually a nerd when it comes down to it. When people listen to my records, they think I am way cooler than what I really am. (Laughs) I am just a regular person. So yeah, I definitely think the two words best to describe me would be laid-back and hopeful.

Tell us about your life growing up…
I am originally from Cincinnati, “the Nasty Natty” Ohio. I don’t know if you’ve ever been there…

Yes, we have! It’s very mundane. There’s like nothing there. . .
Yeah, there’s not much at all! (Laughs) [But] I was born and raised there, [and] it was a great place to grow up. Especially because that’s all I knew at the time.

When did your love affair with music begin?
Music’s always been around. I started playing classical piano at age five, and then moved into singing. I sang all the time in church.

My family has always been into music. My grandfather on my mom’s side was actually a really well known jazz and blues guitar player. He played for [Ohio-based] King’s Records in the 50’s and 60’s, where James Brown came out of. Then my grandmother on my father’s side was a touring singer. She’s like a big diva. Once you meet her, you would be like, ‘yeah she’s a diva.’ (Laughs) She used to call herself the ‘Poor man’s Diana Ross,’ actually. She is great. Because she’s been touring before, she is the person I would call to ask questions about the band, and she always gives me good advice. And then my dad’s also a guitar player.

You went the traditional route [at first], going to college, and finding yourself working a nine-to-five. . .
Yeah, I went to Morehouse College in Atlanta and I majored in Music and Business. [Then] I moved to New York, where I got myself a “real” job as a consultant. I sat behind a desk, and hated every minute of it.

Funny story: while I was in college, John Legend wound up interviewing me for an internship. At the time, he worked at Boston Consulting Group, and when I went on the interview the company gave me a little bio card on him. It said his name was John Stevens, and that he had played for Lauryn Hill before. I thought it was really dope, and I thought “He’s a musician; I got this in the bag. He’s gonna give me this job.” And so I walked in, I met him, and we did the interview. He passed me onto the next level, but unfortunately, I did not get the job.

I did keep in touch with him, and it was really interesting because I got to see him go from just playing at the local level in New York, [to] becoming this huge star. And that’s what I want too.
